Those are the ones which haven't been 'converted' by being driven under a railway bridge.

That is a famous viewpoint of the annual event, but the first time I have seen an open top bus.

Open toppers in 2024.

That buses picture is also in the Daily Mail's write-up of the event - they've got a nice set of 8. But that's one of their subscribers-only stories, and they don't do gifting (I only read it for entertainment, not news, honest ).

Thank you - may be today's Telegraph but the article is dated 20th August 2025?  Having read it, much of the story (and the other stuff around that's churning out) is the same as it was last year.  The article reports 28 old Routemaster buses out of 40 buses in total on the service and I'll be interested to learn the 2026 equivalent stats.
Oops - apologies. It's strange - I searched for 'imber' using the DT's search, and that's the closest/latest that comes up. Can't see one on the (digital) front page, which is where I'd expect to see it mentioned.

Can someone point me in the direction of an image attaching 'how to' for the forum please?

Thanks for posting, chipbury (another Chris )

I'm digging around for some previous suggestions on how to add images to posts. This topic may help, but I'll see whether I can find some more definitive guidance - I'm sure we have discussed this before on the Coffee Shop forum.

CfN.

An update - or even a new topic - on images with posts would make sense, and probably for me to write it with the technical server background I have.

In summary, there are two ways of sharing an image with(in) a post. The first is for you to host the image somewhere else (away from the Coffee Shop) and hot link it into your post.  The second is for you to use the forum's very limited attachment facility which you will find under "additional options" as you post.   You asked about "directions on image attaching"  and so I am, somewhat pedantically, pointing you at that, though it is by far the less flexible way of doing it.

You need the file you want to be attached on your local computer / posting device before you post, and when you "choose file" you can navigate locally and select it.  You'll note the size and number of images you can add in this way is limited, and unstated there are restrictions on the file type too,  as we don't want to be carriers of viruses and other nasties on the Coffee Shop.  I am - as I write this - attaching a picture of the 2 car 158 that called at Warminster on its way from Portsmouth to Cardiff at around 14:10 yesterday.

The presence of an attached image will ONLY be reported  / seen when you look at the individual post - so it won't be seen on things like "recents" or - as yet - on the responsive front end.   Neither will it be seen by forum guests - logged in members only.

Image hosting can take a huge amount of space we don't have ... and be a significant issue on copyright - see https://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=32279.0 which highlights that.   We "attach light" here and it's far better if you can host using a service / server which is built for image hosting ...

Yesterday was my first Imberbus, my wife and I got the train from Freshford to Warminster and joined the long queue at the railway station at 0915hrs.  It took about 45mins to get on the bus to Market Lavington (we could have gone to Imber a bit earlier).
We travelled all the routes on 6 different buses and arrived back in Warminster at 1530hrs.  We had a coffee stop in Market Lavington, and a lunch stop in Tilshead.

All in all an excellent day and one I can recommend to anyone whether a bus enthusiast or not (this is the first time we'd been on a bus day like this - we'd probably do another).
After a few beers and a fantastic pizza in Warminster (The Old Fire Station) we hot footed it back to the railway station to catch a suitable train as the next 3 we could use were 1 delayed and 2 cancelled!

Can someone point me in the direction of an image attaching 'how to' for the forum please?

Cheers,

Chris

The first time is always an eye-opener, CfN!

Glad you enjoyed the day. I was one of those numerous bus enthusiast photographers myself a couple years ago. Accompanied by my best friend.

EDIT: I never did get round to putting together a YouTube compilation from all my video and photos taken in 2024. Still have tjem all saved. One day maybe...

Today was my first experience of an Imber Bus day.  I met up with grahame, and we toured (some of) the 23A route in company.

My impressions are all favourable.  I was frankly rather startled to see just how many people were queuing up to 'get a bus to Imber' at Warminster Station.  I was also amazed at how huge the military firing range on Salisbury Plain is: I'd looked at it on an Ordnance Survey map, and noted that it is quite extensive - but travelling through it, in real life, it's vast!  Lots of rusting hulks of old tanks, visible from the roadway, but with cheery warning signs saying 'These are targets - Do not try to play on them'.

Interestingly, on almost every corner and junction, there were bus enthusiast photographers (and I do not use that term in any way derogatively) who had apparently negotiated their way to such vantage points.

My thanks to grahame, for acting as my local guide during my exploration: it was a grand day out.

One can only hope that there are no crew shortages, and that there are not more buses than usual requiring repairs at the same time.

The only crew shortage around this morning ...

14:19 Westbury to Swindon due 15:01
15:14 Swindon to Westbury due 15:58

15:14 Swindon to Westbury due 15:58 will be cancelled.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

I suspect that there IS enough crew around - just not enough with the route knowdlege.

Thank goodness that root knowledge with experience in the prior 6 months is NOT a requirement on route 23A which runs from Warminster, via Imber to Gore's Cross, journeys on to Brazen Bottom, Chitterne and New Zealand Camp.

If you are bringing younger family members and / or partners tomorrow:

Warminster has become Roarminster, with a dinosaur takeover.

Warminster Town Council and the Warminster Business Network (WBN) has created a fun dinosaur trail, transforming the town with six dinosaur models installed at five locations until Saturday 5th September.

Visitors and residents will be encouraged to explore the town, find and learn about the different dinosaurs, enter a prize draw and take part in fun activities with a full programme of dinosaur events planned throughout the summer holidays.

35 degrees today (13th) and I am defensibly staying at home.  Weather forecast is 30 degrees tomoorow, and 25 on Saturday which should be good for the Imber Bus.   I will be carrying a bottle of water never the less.   Plans such that if the forecast changes and the temperature is higher than what I regard as safe for me, I'll change plans and not toddle along.   Others - please judge it for your own wellbeing.

Indeed, but it's miles from where the Routemaster buses will be, which I suspect many members will be reaching by train or (in my case) connecting bus.

I have moved and merged several previous topics here, which all relate specifically to the subject of 'Imber Bus' events. This is therefore our definitive topic on that subject, including all historic posts: as ever, nothing has been deleted, and the original post headings have been preserved wherever possible.

I continue to look forward to meeting some of you at Imber on Saturday.

To meet up, Imber Church is always very busy with long queues on bus days, though worthwhile for me anyway to spend some time there and catch up very briefly with old friends.    Does anyone fancy choosing / recommending anywhere that might be slightly quieter even on this day?

Imber Church open for viewing and refreshments from 10am to 6pm;

The refurbished Market Lavington Museum will be open again in the Old School House next to the village church and serving cream teas until 5pm;

Light refreshments also available at the village halls in Tilshead and Chitterne, at St.Arbucks Community Coffee House in Market Lavington and also in Warminster at the Beans & Bits Cafe at Warminster Station and at the Chapel of St. Lawrence on the High Street.

Public houses will also be available at Warminster, Market Lavington and West Lavington, along with the reopened Kings Head at Chitterne.

A small transport sales stall will be available inside Tilshead village hall.

Exhibition of Imber and Imberbus related cartoons at Warminster Library and a Dinosaur trail around the town for families to follow.

Performances by the Bratton Silver Band, plus displays by the London Transport Museum and the Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust.

Morris Dancing at Imber (1000-1100), Market Lavington Museum & The Green Man (1200-1400) and Tilshead (1500-1600).

Hmm.  My train from NLS at 08:45 to WMN (via BRI) should get me there at 10:10.

We can then meet up somewhere in Warminster, before yomping over those artillery ranges to Imber.

My understanding is that the buses at those locations will first travel in from the Warminster area, so you may not get such an early start as at Warminster area. That may not bother you.

The reason the say local residents is that there is no car parking provided, so they want those local enough to be able to catch a bus there to to do that or park in Warminster

Yes - but not with a Warminster start:
Local residents will also be able to to travel to Imber from Chitterne, Tilshead and the Lavingtons by paying the conductor in cash on the bus.

I can see no definition of "local residents" but in past years anyone has been able to join at Lavingon and I'm pretty sure that's how I will join this year, even though no longer a resident of East Lavington (a.k.a. Easteron). No 272 bus from across the road from us into Devizes, then 3A, 3X, 2 or X2 to Market Lavington or West Lavington.  Saves the early queues at Warminster.

The date is set for Imberbus 2026 !
Posted on 1 January 2026
We are pleased to start 2026 by announcing that this year, we are planning to run the Imberbus service on

Saturday 15th August 2026

when several vintage former London Transport Routemaster double deckers (plus a few newer ones) along with some visiting buses from other areas, will again provide a bus service from Warminster Station to Imber and other isolated locations on the Salisbury Plain between 10am and 6pm.

Once again our event will be a Car Free Day, with the only access to Imber on 15th August being on the buses operating the Imberbus service. These special arrangements help to keep traffic congestion around Imber village to a minimum, but they do mean that there are some restrictions on what you can and cannot do when you get there, details of which will be confirmed during the summer.

IMG_1116-001 (1568 x 1045)The timetable for this year’s service will also be published during the summer and is expected to be very similar to the one used in 2025.

Yup... the throat... and the strepsils orange and vitamin 'c' thing. The specific mechanism is that the vitamin 'C' supplies a somewhat low pH environment for the particular antibacterial agent they contain, said environment with those ingredients causes the Covid virus to form clumps, which the body's immune system, which may have been looking past the infection, regards as highly suspicious, so it puts the virus on the "Undesirable" list and takes action against it.

My experience of it, laid low by Covid back in '21... it, plus the throat it gave me, then took me out of circulation for days on end. The painful throat meant that I didn't feel like swallowing the copious saliva I was producing, which turns out to be a good thing against the case that the stomach's acid bath is incapable of eliminating the virus.

An O₂ sats meter was useful, but the sore throat continued to be a stopper and wasn't relenting.

Eventually, reading up on the ingredients and looking out an over-the-counter medicine that contained them, took one and literally 10 minutes later the throat pain was 95% abated, not because it had been anaesthetised away but because some mechanism had been stopped in its tracks. Having vanished, it stayed vanished for some time, and then got the same treatment every time it threatened to return.

Anyway, hope you're both soon feeling a lot better.

"Liked" that by accident, 'cos, sorry to see this. If either of you get the terrible sore throat, specifically Strepsils orange with vitamin 'C'. They're not an antiviral so, they shouldn't be expected to help with this, but there's science behind their effectiveness regarding the sore throat symptom.

Lisa is far worse throat wise that I am ... I am feeling dopey, thick, weird, frustrated and unable to settle to anything - so nothing unusual there.  Seriously keeping an eye on her.  We have cancelled / postponed a whole number of things we were looking at doing (re)starting over the next couple of weeks.

We have a variety of sweet and lozenges and powders that are primarily for Lisa,  and a supermarket delivery scheduled for tomorrow, and as it gets into a cool evening I will probably go out for a breath of fresh air.

I know I am posting in public here - so no secrets (and off topic) - but yet to friends. To say I feel perhaps happier than I have in a long while that I have far less tense / urgent coming up that has deadlines or expectations on me than I have had in a long while.  There is temptation to inform and explain many of the local issues, and indeed to suggest solutions and ways forward but I'm much more biting my tongue and moving past to other more specific stuff.  My finger remains on the pulse of the Coffee Shop servers - fascinating analysis this morning of how the AI bots are crawling us, and how we can guide / instruct / demand / force their habits. Lots of false signups but new valid ones have zeroed and that's of concern, perhaps, for the future.

Following on from suspicious symptoms, Lisa and I have both taken Covid tests this morning and both have come out positive - i.e. indications that we have covid.   So CANCELLING my trip to Imber for today.

Love to see any other members who make Imber next Saturday (16.8.2025) - I'll be catching the bus at 09:25 from home, change onto the 2, X2, 3A or 3C in Devizes and joining the 23A at one of the Lavingtons or Gore Cross Bus Station.

I have been a couple of time before and it is a worthwhile trip, but I fear it will be too hot for me tomorrow.

I've not been able attend this event in previous years, due to my work commitments, but now that I'm retired ...

Agreed it may be hotter later in the day, so I am aiming for a morning / lunchtime excursion.  The 08:45 train from NLS should get me to WMN at 10:10, so I'll look out for you there, grahame.

From the BBC:

Buses to run to the abandoned village of Imber

Nearly 40 routemaster buses will be travelling around Salisbury Plain on Saturday, taking people to the abandoned village of Imber.

Owned by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the village is only opened on certain days of the year as it is a training area.

Last year, about 4,000 people took the Imberbus trip, which raised £35,000 for charity.

The village is now abandoned after residents were evicted in 1943 to allow the military to use it for training in World War Two. It has remained empty since.

The annual Imberbus day has been going since 2009, when it started with four buses. It now includes vintage and modern red routemaster buses which are donated by companies for the day. Crews from all over the country also donate their time.

While the Imberbus will only run on Saturday, Imber village has other open days during the year where visitors have to find their own way there.

Michael Meilton is one of those overseeing the operation and said buses will start at 9:30 BST from Warminster, but also go to some nearby villages.

There will be buses leaving Warminster Station every 10 to 15 minutes and returning from Imber until 17:30 BST.

Imber will have its church open to see as well as the scenery.

Buses also going to Tilshead, Chitterne, New Zealand Farm Camp, West Lavington, Market Lavington and Brazen Bottom are on at least twice an hour too, with alternative parking at Chitterne.

Tea and cake is available in most of the villages, with historical displays in a couple too and an exhibition on at The Athenaeum in Warminster. Mr Meilton said some travel to multiple villages to test all the refreshments.

There are no in advance tickets - people need to turn up and pay on the day, with cash being the best option. Card payments are only available at Warminster Station. It will cost £10 for adults and £2 for children.

"What's so special is seeing the faces of people who have taken their son or grandson for a ride on the bus to Imber," added Mr Meilton.

To me, that conjures up an image of an artillery officer, looking out over the range and shouting "Open fire!  No, that's not an order - it's a warning!!"

Could also do with some rain. The plain is very dry and a repeat of previous events in the year https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c70nnnnz0ldo could put the event at risk. Especially the section that goes across the top of the Larkhill/Westdown range to Brazen Bottom and the Lavingtons. The civilian Fire and Rescue Service won't get involved because the risk in military areas. I would imagine with cut backs the nearest MoD fire service will be Boscombe Down, and probably not suited to wild fires on the ranges.

16th August 2025 ...

Our event attracts hundreds of people and can overload the car parks in Warminster town centre if everyone tries to park there. Fortunately Warminster is well served by buses and trains from the surrounding towns, as well as cities such as Cardiff, Bristol, Bath, Salisbury, Southampton and Portsmouth and so we strongly recommend that you use these if at all possible.

These days, I hesitate to agree "well served" - the timetable is good, but recent record on actually running the trains is poor - these graphics from the last 4 weekends as I write.  And in recent years, Imber bus day has brought rather more crowds by train than the services that have run could comfortably cope with.  My personal view would be that it's fine for public transport officianados, but you'll probably be risking disappointment and frustration if you bring along family looking for a fun day out.

Having made that point, Warminster has far more trains that Melksham (a town of similiar size) in the timetable, and many fewer cancellations.

Question that's bugging me. One of the Imberbus destinations is Tilshead. How is that pronounced? is it "Tils head" or "Til Shed"

Heard both today.

Wikipedia do say ...

Tilshead (/ˈtɪlshɛd/)

It was more about the buses than the people for me! Although I did have a nice chat with Chris Nix from the London Transport Museum. He's one of the presenters of the 'Hidden London Hangouts' YouTube channel, as well as a contributor/historian/producer for UKTV's 'Secrets of the London Underground'. His day job is Director of Content at the London Transport Museum.

I have dozens of bus pictures and videos from the day. I'll be putting together a YouTube video over the coming days and will post it here. In the meantime here's a nice pair of Bristols to gawp at.

There are a small handful of cancellations on the Bristol-Salisbury stoppers in the morning/early afternoon.
The number of cancellations has increased to include the afternoon and evening sadly, so the Cardiff-Portsmouth’s will be taking the strain this evening for the journeys home.

Good news there is a full service operating on the Cardiff-Portsmouth’s today.
However there are three diagrams running short formed according to JC/RTT so some trains may be a bit cozy onboard.

I've decided to take the train from Taunton to Warminster tomorrow. Not driving means I can have a beer or two in one of the village pubs along the Imberbus route.

Without Finn as it's forecast warm and he'll struggle with a long day out. He's an OAG now! He'll keep Mumsy company instead.

May see you somewhere there ...  our local train operator is a none-operator again this morning and the way for me to Imber is going to be by bus all the way and not just half the way.

*snip* ...and there is an extra "unadvertised express" at 09:55 too that starts back at Tonbridge.

Tonbridge - Waterloo - Warminster. It's good to see the railways taking advantage of that little-used spur from Waterloo East and across the concourse.

Errr....Tonbridge - Guildford - Waterloo anyone?

That reminds me, on a journey from Kemble to Wye, I opted to travel via Reading - Redhill - Tonbridge. (This was ages ago).

This turned out to be a poor choice, as the Reading to Redhill train failed within a signalling section and far from anything that would allow the crew to communicate, somewhere near Ash Vale.

Further complicating things, the guard was wearing fragile-ish shoes with high heels, these weren't the best footwear for a hike along the line to put down detonators and also seek help and it was a long time before the train was rescued (I can't recall how).

With Tonbridge eventually reached, British Rail were in no way motived to stop a fast train there to get things moving for the delayed passengers, so it was a bit of a wait at Tonbridge (time to enjoy the sight and sound of a Hastings diesel threading the singular overbridge there) and then on a stopper to continue along the long Redhill to Ashford straight, calling at its series of stations, rather than on a fast which, between Tonbridge and Ashford, often seemed to do everything short of breaking the sound barrier.

My arrival was somewhat later than I intended.

The "unadvertised express" is a fully booked charter using the preserved Hastings unit

According to some of our members, then, that can't be a proper express - not long enough ... and with the power in the carriages.

4 + 2 half carriages of people is going to put a significant load on the buses - unless there's a White Horse option taken up by a lot of passengers of having a day in Westbury instead.

P.S. Love the Hastings units.  Not been on it, though, since the trip to Fawley Gates!

There are direct trains from Waterloo to Warminster tomorrow at 08:50 and 17:50 (regular services that run on toward Yeovil from Westbury and do not serve stations from Trowbridge to Bristol, and there is an extra "unadvertised express" at 09:55 too that starts back at Tonbridge.

Real Time Trains shows a return services from Warminster at 17:00 via Waterloo to Tonbridge, and services at 08:18 and 11:50 which join to other trains at Salisbury and then carry on to Waterloo.
