From the BBC:

Heatwave eases as wind and rain drift across UK

Wind and rain are drifting across the UK, bringing more mild temperatures following a wave of extreme heat, the Met Office said.

It forecast Sunday would feel fresher for most, with sun and scattered showers, and that a weather front was due to push in from the west over Monday evening, bringing a wet end to the weekend.

On Saturday, the UK experienced its hottest day of the year, with temperatures of 33.2C (91.8F) recorded in Charlwood, near Gatwick.

An amber heat health alert covering England, first issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) on Thursday, remains in place until 09:00 BST Monday. An amber alert warns health and social care services are likely to be "significantly" affected by the high temperatures, including through an increase in demand and a rise in deaths particularly among those aged 65 or over or with health conditions.

After the hottest weather of the year on Saturday and some late thunderstorms, Sunday has felt very different. Temperatures are lower and the humidity has dropped. Temperatures have reached around 27C in southeast England but more cloud is streaming over the UK on a brisk westerly wind that is bringing showers or longer spells of rain to many areas.

The week ahead will remain more unsettled with some rain at times, together with some sunshine. It will still be cooler and fresher than it has been but there will be some very warm weather at times in eastern parts of England.

Monday will see fewer showers and more sunshine. There could be some light and patchy rain on Tuesday. But later on Wednesday and Wednesday night, muggy air from France means there is the risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms. This should clear on Thursday with more wet and windy weather for northern areas to end the week with warmth further south.

During Saturday's extreme heat, passengers on trains in south London had to evacuate after a fault on a train near Loughborough Junction brought all services in the area to a halt.

"Without power and air conditioning on such a hot day, we pulled all resources from across Sussex and Kent to get personnel on site to safely evacuate passengers as quickly as possible along the track," Thameslink and National Rail said in a statement.

My thanks to you all for your helpful comments and suggestions.

As it turned out, due to my expected use of a Senior Railcard over the next year, I let the previous one lapse and bought a new one online.

Good news, in that a letter from the Senior Railcard Team dated 16 June 2025 enclosed my plastic card which is valid until 21 June 2026.  Perfect, for my purposes.

I commend Senior Railcard to anyone who is eligible - and indeed, all other categories of Railcard, wherever you may be eligible.

Fair comment. And how many of the potential passengers for that service would have been those travelling from Swindon to Westbury, proportionately?

I don't know: how busy is that remaining service between Westbury and Weymouth on a Sunday, during a heatwave?

Thameslink train passengers evacuated as temperatures soar - 21 June 2025

From the BBC:

Passengers have been forced to evacuate trains in south London as temperatures soared above 30C (86F).

A fault on a train near Loughborough Junction brought all services in the area to a halt, three of them outside station platforms, Thameslink and Network Rail said in a joint statement.

"Without power and air conditioning on such a hot day, we pulled all resources from across Sussex and Kent to get personnel on site to safely evacuate passengers as quickly as possible along the track," it said.

Angela Lewis, a Gatwick-bound passenger, said it was "a bloody nightmare". Thameslink apologised to those affected for the "difficult and uncomfortable experience".

The incident began at about 10:40 BST with the evacuations of the first two trains completed at about 12:20 and the third at about 13:10, a spokesperson said.

They added that due to engineering works, this was the only route taking Thameslink services south out of London and "and disruption is expected into the evening".

Writing on social media, Ms Lewis said passengers had been left on the train for about two hours before being removed.

"Some people had luggage and infants, had been trying to get to Gatwick," she said.

Ms Lewis added that some had missed their flights due to the disruption, adding: "Who will compensate them?"

Brazil - At least eight dead in hot air balloon accident - 21 June 2025
In "The Wider Picture Overseas" [362551/30385/52]

From the BBC:

At least eight people have died in a hot air balloon accident in Brazil, a state governor has said.

There were 21 people on board the balloon in the city of Praia Grande on Saturday morning, Governor of Santa Catarina Jorginho Mello said in a post on X.

Thirteen people, including the pilot, survived and no one is missing, the state government press office said. It added that the balloon had crashed near a health centre.

"According to the pilot, who is one of the survivors, a fire started inside the basket, so he started to lower the balloon, and when the balloon was very close to the ground he told people to jump," officer Tiago Luiz Lemos, from the Praia Grande police station, told reporters at the scene. "They started to jump, but some people did not manage to. The flames started to grow and because of the weight, the balloon began to rise again. It later fell because of a loss of suspension."

The state government press office said 13 survivors were taken to nearby hospitals.

In a video also posted on X, Mello, who is on an official mission in China, said he had sent "the entire state structure" to "rescue, help and comfort the families" and was continuing to monitor the situation.

"We are in mourning, what happened is a tragedy," he added. "We will investigate why this happened. But the important thing now is to do everything possible to reach out to the people and the families."

Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva posted on X expressing his "solidarity with the families of the victims". He said he had placed "the federal government at the disposal of the victims" and that "state and municipal forces" were working on the rescue and care of the survivors.

Praia Grande is in southern Santa Catarina and is a popular tourist destination. The city is known for it's ballooning activities.

Caught the train from Melksham to Bath and back today (left just after 9, home by 2). Sadly, it's noteworthy that I successfully achieved the trip without any significant delays or cancellations - though I see it's a good job I didn't want to return any later this afternoon. Just wanted to say though that the car abandoned across the entrance to Mkm station has gone.

The majority do work.  Eight out of ten trains in the December 2024 to May 2025 timetable ran (at Melksham) and it's a better number - nine out of ten - if you're looking at the services that were planned to run 48 hours ahead.  Problem is that even 9 out of 10 means a broken journey once a week for a 5 day commuter with outward or back.

First pic Finn was wisely taking the shade under the table while I enjoyed my ale. Said ale had ice cubes in it. Warm beer is very much the thing for us Englishmen to 'enjoy' but I wanted alcohol and refreshment.

2266 stations listed on the "Disused Stations" website

Beeching proposed closing 2363 stations - of course some extras have been closed and some of his proposals did not go ahead.   But there were lots closed before Dr Beeching came along.  I couldn't come up with a number ... but take a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_closed_railway_stations_in_Great_Britain:_A for just those starting with "A".   So the Disused Stations website probable has pages for around 50% of them ... +- 25% - I'm guessing!

15:14 Swindon to Westbury due 15:58

15:14 Swindon to Westbury due 15:58 will be cancelled.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

There used to be two trains each way in the middle of Saturday afternoon and GWR were having trouble crewing them both.  I went public in support of cutting out one of the two in order to make the system and remaining train robust.   Sad that they can't even find crew for the remaining mid-afternoon train.  Do I feel mislead and shortchanged?  Is that a reasonable feeling in the circumstances??

The link in the OP is to a story on the Wiltshire News website, rather than a railway history website. But the story does include a link to the Disused Stations website, which looks to be pretty good? I was going to say comprehensive, but it doesn't have a page for the aforementioned Lacock Halt. This is the Black Dog Halt page:

A week ago I visited Chiseldon, a village that I've cycled through many times since 1960 - and I've also walked through the southern part on half-a-dozen occasions. But this was the first time I explored the "old" village - and was delighted with some of the olde-worlde thatched cottages. On the site of the station there's a useful information board that aimed to help one position oneself; I was looking at my OS Explorer map, metaphorically scratching my head, because on all sides the gradients seemed too steep for a train. A friendly villager explained that after closure the cutting to the south had been filled in, and houses built - leading to concern about their stability.

I walked along the Sustrans trail past the site of Chiseldon Camp and the short-lived spur erected in the Great War to serve it. (I've yet to see an image of this spur). The wide "terminus" platform survives on private land near South Farm.

I've since learned that there was a level crossing at the end of what is now Sambre Road with, a few yards away, a railway bridge crossing a tributary of the River Og.

Yesterday I visited Wiltshire History Centre in Chippenham, sited very close to where the Calne branch left the main line. There's an overgrown footpath, with fly-tipping, that goes through a narrow uninviting tunnel under the branch route before joining the track bed on the edge of a new estate of flats.  A few years ago I'd walked the route from Calne and was puzzled by signs warning that it was closed at certain times; this apparently is to allow game-shooting.

No equivalence as the OP car is not on the highway, but private railway property

Eh?

The front of the car in the OP is on land owned by Wiltshire Council as part of Station Approach.  The rear of the car (you can see the demarcation line in a change of tarmac surface) is indeed on land owned by Network Rail which is also a public entity, and managed by Great Western which is a private company, with signage to suggest that management of vehicles left there has been subcontracted to APCOA. Roughly where the photographer is stood there's a stud in the roadway and the Melksham Tyre folks own the quadrant of land on which their building sits and you can get past the car blocking the entrance by walking across their land. All a bit complicated.

I was talking to someone who owns a business contracting on HS2. A piece of equipment stopped working so they sent an engineer. The engineer explained that they needed to turn the machine on to see the error code although it was probably a £400 card but the HS2 person refused as it broke safety protocols and there was no one available to manage the change process to allow the machine to be turned on. This went on for a while until HS2 asked if the engineer could install a whole new unit which apparently was allowed and there was a change process for. £20,000 later this was done and as an added bonus the contractor was asked to take the old kit away. He replaced the card for £400 and then sold it for £15K.

I've kept the details vague to avoid identifying anyone but fair to say this was not in a high risk area. It does highlight though that perhaps there's not great financial controls and a culture that doesn't really think about the sums of money being spent or sees spending as an easier way to fix problems than managing them. £20K is probably a tiny part of someone's discretionary spend but repeat this hundreds of times over the course of the project and you can see why costs mount up. Also how dysfunctional is a project if you can swap a machine out but not turn it on to run diagnostics?
